An Honorary Symposium at the 2012 TMS Annual Meeting (March 11-15, 2012, Orlando, Florida) will be held in honour of Professor Randall M. German, Associate Dean at the College of Engineering, San Diego State University, USA.

The symposium encompasses the following four areas (which are not restricted to any particular class of materials):

  • Sintering Theory and Practice: includes theoretical and experimental investigations in solid state sintering, current/field-assisted sintering, combustion synthesis, microwave sintering, hot pressing and hot isostatic pressing.
  • Liquid Phase Sintering: including theoretical and experimental studies in permanent and transient liquid phase sintering, in addition to transient reactive liquid phase sintering.
  • Powder Injection Moulding: encompassing modeling and Experimental aspects.
  • Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials Processing: encompasses all other aspects of powders including but not limited to powder production, powder characterisation, powder processing and novel powder consolidation processes.

The deadline for abstract submission is July 15 2011 at www.tms.org

Professor Randall M. German is

Associate Dean at the College of

Engineering, San Diego State

University, USA

Professor German is the author of close to one thousand research articles, fifteen books, twenty five patents and co-editor of nineteen books in the area of sintering and powder-based materials. His fifteen books include Mathematical Relations in Particulate Materials Processing (2008), Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials Processing (2005), Liquid Phase Sintering (1985), Sintering Theory and Practice (1996), and Powder Injection Molding – Design and Applications (2003).

His career accomplishments span fundamental areas including experimental and theoretical aspects in sintering (including solid state sintering, liquid phase sintering and reactive sintering), powder-injection molding and powder processing. Professor German’s career represents a unique deep-routed treatment of scientific issues in the field while maintaining a high level of appreciation for the industrial and practical implications.

Among his numerous recognitions and awards for his contributions, Professor German has been awarded the Tesla medal, is a fellow of the American Society of Metals (ASM) and the American Powder Metallurgy Institute (APMI). As a highly accomplished teacher and educator he has advised more than 100 Doctoral and Masters theses over the span of his career.

Professor German is also a Consulting Editor of Powder Injection Moulding International, the only publication dedicated to the world of MIM and CIM.
