PM High speed steels used to produce woodworking tools
July 3, 2012
Crown Hand Tools, based in Sheffield, UK, is using PM high speed steels to produce what it calls an ‘elitist’ range of Crown Prop-PM woodworking tools such as chisels, gouges, parting tools and end scrapers.
The company states that its PM HSS tools give far superior performance than conventional HSS tools. The Pro-PM turning tools, for example, are said to have a cutting edge which lasts up to 4-5 times longer than conventional tools due to their high hardness (between 66 and 68 Rockwell), excellent grindability and superior toughness.
The Five Piece PM high speed steel tool set shown in the photo contains a Roughing Gouge 3/4″ (19mm), Spindle Gouge 1/4″ (6mm), Bowl Gouge 3/8″ (10mm), Diamond Parting Tool 3/16″ (5mm), and Round Nose Scraper 3/4″ (19mm).
