Arcast Inc., Oxford, Maine, USA, has supplied a custom Electrode Induction Melting Inert Gas (EIGA)-type gas atomiser to the Canadian Centre de métallurgie du Québec (CMQ). The atomiser combines the EIGA bar feed induction drip melt with a ceramic-lined induction crucible and close-coupled atomisation.

The atomiser is used for the production of titanium and refractory metals. The close-coupled system also allows aluminium powder to be produced safely through a design resistant to deflagrations, explains Arcast. The special pressure containment, oxygen control, ventilation and remote operation all allow for improved safety. This multi-function system is reportedly the first of its type with this rating, and combines two different atomising designs into one system.

The CMQ stated, “In order to obtain the production capacities of almost all types of metal powder possible, we have acquired a gas atomiser from Arcast, the only company providing the CMQ the possibility of producing aluminium powders. This equipment will also allow the production of titanium, iron, tool steel, nickel and stainless-steel powders, to name a few.”
