The first Zhuzhou International Conference on Cemented Carbides was held from 13-14 September, 2012, in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, China.

This first international conference was organised by the State Key Laboratary of Cemented Carbide and the State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy in conjunction with many of the related trade associations in China and the leading Chinese cemented carbide producers, universities and research centres.

The successful organisation of such an event reflects the current status of China as the world’s largest producer of tungsten powders and cemented carbide products.

As was pointed out in a keynote presentation by Mr Zhou Juqiu (China Tungsten Industry Association), China today accounts for more than 40% of global cemented carbide production, but in terms of cemented carbide sales value its global share is said to be only around 20%.

Further keynote presentations covered key developments in China in areas of cemented carbide rolls, ultrafine and nanoscale carbide materials, coatings, mining and civil engineering applications for cemented carbide tools., carbide drills for PCBs, and wear and impact resistant carbide tools.

The conference further reviewed the historic development of Cemented Carbides, as well as developments in powders, processing, surface engineering, moulding, characterization and testing.

Around 160 delegates, including more than 20 international participants, attended the conference. Professor Huang Boyun, Director of the Conference Academic Committee, Chinese Engineering Academician, Zhang Guohao, the Deputy Mayor of Zhuzhou City, Senior Engineer Zhang Zhongjian, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Cemented Carbide, and Dr. Alexandra Kusoffsky, Director of R&D at Sandvik AB, Sweden, welcomed participants during the opening ceremony.
