Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corp. (WISCO), located on the Changjiang River in the eastern suburb of Wuhan, Hubei Province, is China’s third largest steel producer with an annual production capacity of 20 million tonnes. Its main steel products include hot and cold rolled sheet, sections, heavy duty rails, plate, wire, pressure vessel steel and high performance steels.

A major by-product of the company’s steel mills is mill scale which is then recycled into products such as iron oxide powder and pure iron sponge powder. In 2009/2010 WISCO is reported to have increased the total amount of mill scale recycled by 27% to 258,000 tonnes. Of this nearly 18,000 tonnes was processed to reduced iron powder – an increase of 7%, and 22,000 tonnes of iron oxide powder – a fourfold increase. According to a report in Chinese PM Network WISCO is planning to increase capacity for reduced iron powder by investing in another tunnel kiln.
