VW’s head of materials research and manufacturing processes to review PM in the automotive industry
September 28, 2016
Dr Oliver Schauerte, Head of Materials Research and Manufacturing Processes at Volkswagen AG, Germany, will present his view of current and future applications for Powder Metallurgy in the automotive industry during the opening plenary session at the World PM2016 Congress in Hamburg, Germany, October 9-13.
Schauerte states that although not very well known as structural materials in automotive production, PM materials have played a key role in the manufacturing of high strength and highly stressed automotive components for many decades. Typical applications are mainly found in the drivetrain, such as sprocket wheels, various components in the valvetrain, flanges, and many applications in the gear box, he adds.
New demands for more fuel economy and lightweight design, as well as the challenges resulting from the rising demand for electrical drivetrains, give new perspectives for Powder Metallurgy, claims Schauerte.
The World PM2016 Congress & Exhibition, organised and sponsored by the European Powder Metallurgy Association, is only held in Europe once every six years and is an essential destination for the international PM community to meet its suppliers, producers and end-users and to discover the latest innovations in the state-of-the-art PM technology.
