Sandvik Materials Technology has officially opened its first high-tech research and development centre in China. The new facility is located approximately 250 km north west of Shanghai, adjacent to its manufacturing operation in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, and marks a significant milestone in the company’s development in China.

Construction of the Zhenjiang R&D Centre began in March 2013 and was completed last month. It covers an area of 1,440 m2, including laboratories, offices, conference facilities and an exhibition area which will undertake material investigation, application tests, market support, seminars and training courses. Sandvik claims that the company’s investment in research and development is the largest in the industry.

“For more than 150 years Sandvik has been committed to scientific and technical innovation by virtue of our world-leading R&D capability and metallurgical expertise. Our aim is to provide advanced materials for the most critical parts of customers’ products to meet their various requirements, setting the industry standard. The new R&D centre will help us further realise the sustainable goals that SMT always adheres to, making industrial processes safer and more efficient,” stated Petra Einarsson, President of Sandvik Materials Technology.

In addition to supporting the Sandvik business, the new centre will also provide technical training for the sales organisation and customers. It will also conduct in-depth research on material applications to meet customers’ requirements, the company stated.

“The Chinese market and the Asian market are of extreme importance to Sandvik,” added Peter Samuelsson, Vice President and Head of R&D and Technology at Sandvik Materials Technology. “The newly-built Zhenjiang R&D Centre will help us better serve the local market. As Sandvik Material Technology’s first R&D centre in China, it is an important step for our further development here. Equipped with advanced facilities and staffed by experienced scientific researchers the centre will provide comprehensive technical support leading to the delivery of even better product solutions and service to China.”
