Environmental, engineer and strategic consulting company Ricardo has formally opened its new Electrified Propulsion Research Centre at its Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, UK, headquarters. The addition is part of the company’s mission to support decarbonising global transport and energy sectors.

The new Electrified Propulsion Research Centre will be supported with digital engineering and simulation technology, including digital twins which will replicate the physical environment, refined with actual test data to accelerate development times. It will provide customers with access to a powerful flexible package of decarbonised, electrified transport engineering test and development services.

Designed with the company’s existing powertrain optimisation and electrification work in mind, the £5.5 million research centre will enable research and development of a new generation of electric vehicles, from subsystems to fully-integrated powertrains. It hopes to significantly increase the range of services and solutions to its customers across all platforms and applications in the development of electric vehicles.

Ricardo stated that these customer solutions will be greener, as they are less energy and resource intensive; less risky, from development through more efficient techniques; and will reduce cost and time to market, providing a competitive advantage.

“We continue to consolidate our position as a trusted engineering partner delivering clean, efficient and integrated propulsion and energy systems across all modes of transport. A key component of our strategy is to establish a global centre of excellence for electrified transport engineering at our Shoreham Technical Centre: which will be essential for the future of sustainable mobility,” stated Steve Dyke, Managing Director, Ricardo Automotive and Industrial EMEA Division.
