Mott Corporation opens new facility quadrupling production capacity of green hydrogen components
November 26, 2024
Mott Corporation has opened a new 6,000 m² facility near its headquarters in Farmington, Connecticut, USA. The facility will house up to 100 new and quadruple Mott’s production capacity for custom-designed green hydrogen engineering components. It will also serve as a centre of excellence, enabling rapid prototyping of filtration technology for customers in clean energy, semiconductor, defence, healthcare, and other industries.
Mott produces ultra-thin, porous metal sheets, which are a critical component in the generation of green hydrogen, a low-emission fuel essential for the world’s energy transition. Mott’s titanium Porous Transport Layers (PTLs) are reported to be among the smoothest and thinnest in the world, allowing for the most efficient and cost-effective production of green hydrogen. High-quality PTLs, such as those manufactured using a titanium-sintered porous sheet method, play a crucial role in determining the performance of hydrogen generation.
Mott recently won a $10 million grant from the US Department of Energy to accelerate design and manufacturing of the next generation of PTLs. These next-generation PTLs are expected to help drive down the cost of clean hydrogen, consistent with the federal government’s ‘Hydrogen Shot’ initiative to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per 1 kg by 2030.
“This new facility will continue to position Mott as a leader in clean energy development, and add to Connecticut’s strength as a home of innovation and manufacturing,” stated Mott President Boris Levin. “When combined with our recent $10 million grant from the Department of Energy, this expansion will allow us to quadruple our production capacity and serve more customers in the rapidly growing green hydrogen industry. We could not have gotten here without our tremendously committed employees, who produce world class technology and go above and beyond for our customers every day. We are also grateful to Governor Lamont, Senator Murphy, and our entire Connecticut Congressional delegation for their strong support.”
“Increasing production of green hydrogen—hydrogen power created using renewable energy sources like wind or solar—will help us tackle the climate crisis, create good-paying jobs and lower energy costs for consumers,” said Senator Chris Murphy. “Mott’s new clean energy facility is another example of how Connecticut is leading the way in clean energy engineering and manufacturing innovation, and I look forward to seeing their continued growth in our state.”
“I’m excited that an innovative company like Mott is expanding its presence in Connecticut through the creation of a new facility where they are adding new jobs and developing cutting-edge products that have the power to set industry standards,” said Governor Ned Lamont. “Clean-energy continues to be a high-growth sector nationwide and I’m glad that a Connecticut-based company like Mott is staying one step ahead of the competition.”
