Malvern Panalytical to hold webinar on X-ray diffraction for metal Additive Manufacturing

October 26, 2020

Malvern Panalytical, a supplier of analytical instrumentation and automation solutions provider, and part of Spectris plc, Egham, Surrey, UK, will hold a webinar titled ‘Additive Manufacturing of metal alloys: Why XRD is an important tool for characterizing metal powders and built components’ in November.

For metal fabrication processes such as casting, forging, and isostatic pressing, the heating-cooling regimes are more prolonged, controlled and homogeneous. However, for powder bed-based Additive Manufacturing processes such as Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), the heating-cooling regimes are rapid and location-specific.

This can lead to different microstructures than those obtained with conventional processes, even with the same alloy composition. Microstructures can change further with post-treatments such as heating, machining and isostatic pressing.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a non-destructive analytical technique that can be used to study these processes by measuring microstructural characteristics such as phase composition, crystallite size, texture (crystallite orientation), and residual stress/strain.

During the webinar, Dr Scott Speakman will discuss how XRD can be used to study and optimise the AM process, including through powder and component analysis, and present several application examples.

The webinar will be held live on November 19, 2020, from 10:30–11:30 AM (EST). Registration is available via the event website.
