A number of Japanese conglomerates with significant PM part and cemented carbide operations have published their financial results for the year ending March 31, 2011.

The results do not yet reflect the impact of the tragic earthquake and tsunami in north east Japan in mid-March and nearly all of the Japanese companies in the sector are offering cautious estimates for the current 2011 financial year. Japan has already announced that the country has slipped back into a temporary recession through decrease in manufacturing output and a decline in consumer spending.

Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (SEI)

SEI reported net sales of Yen 2,033.8 billion ($25.5 billion) for the financial year 2010, an increase of 10.7% over the previous year. Operating income increased to Yen 103.8 billion ($1.3 billion), up from Yen 51,728 million ($648 million) in 2009. The Industrial Materials Division which includes PM parts, cemented carbide and A.L.M.T.’s production of hard materials/diamond tools, recorded sales of Yen 227.5 billion ($2.8 billion), an increase of 21.6%.
