The UK’s Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), reports that on February 25, 2019, it celebrated 150 years since the formation of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1869.

During the Inauguration Day celebrations, a number of presentations highlighted innovations in the past, present and future. Sir Colin Humphreys, Dr Sue Mossman and Kate Thornton, Senior Vice President of IOM3 presented talks looking back on the history of Bessemer, the current trends and state of materials and looking ahead at some of the challenges for the materials entrepreneur of the future.

The presentations were followed with an interactive workshop, the sealing of a time capsule with all ideas and input from the workshop, and the inauguration of the first female president of IOM3, Professor Serena Best.

To coincide with its 150th-anniversary celebrations, IOM3 also launched a digital library portal, allowing free access to some historic content from its extensive archive. To find out more about the library portal, visit iom3.captureweb.co.uk.
