The Institution for Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) will hold its 13th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging at Twickenham Stadium, London, May 16-17, 2018. The biennial event will reportedly address current and novel aspects of turbocharging system designs and boosting solutions, and will see a number of industry-leading companies present their technical findings and innovative solutions across the conference programme.

The twelfth iteration of the conference took place in 2016 and saw delegates attend from Austria, China, Germany, Japan, Sweden, USA, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, Algeria and Switzerland.

At this year’s event, the organisers report that downsizing and downspeeding development for spark ignition, compression ignition and hybrid engines will be the focus, as these provide the fundamental ways in which companies can meet current emission legislation and environmental trends for CO2 reduction. Focusing on air management solutions and improvements in overall engine reliability, durability and compactness, the conference is expected to examine a range of new systems developments being implemented.

The conference programme will open with a keynote presentation by Gilles Simon, Technical Director of the FIA, and features further presentations by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Honeywell, BorgWarner Turbo, Ford Werke AG, Volkswagen AG, Cummins Turbo Technologies, Scania CV AB, ABB Turbo Systems and MAHLE Powertrain Limited

The full range of topics on offer is expected to include:

  • Downsizing, down-speeding and e-boosting concepts
  • Implications of current legislation (Euro 7 and Worldwide Light Vehicle Driving Test Cycle)
  • Engine emission, fuel consumption and CO2 reduction under real driving conditions
  • Single, two-stage, supercharged systems and exhaust gas recirculation
  • Improved fatigue life, bearing design and rotodynamics
  • Novel testing methods
  • Advanced simulation and digital prototyping
  • Transient response and altitude performance interaction with hybrid and e-boosting systems
  • Applications of hybrid and exhaust waste energy recovery systems
  • Alternative powertrains and fuel cells turbo blower
  • Aerodynamics of compressors and turbines
  • Control, sensors and software
  • Power electronics and power storage
  • High-speed motors
  • Advanced fuels for engines and applications of air management systems

Early-bird registration is available at a discounted rate until March 23, 2018. In addition, twenty places have been reserved for engineering students to join the conference free of charge, as part of the IMechE’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of engineers. The competition is open to all undergraduate or postgraduate engineering students currently on a university course, and the deadline for entries is April 6, 2018.
