Technologies supplied by Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML), are featured in all but one of the 12 winners in the 2015 International Engine of the Year Awards, state the company.

The engines, which individually power vehicles from Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and PSA Peugeot Citroën, use between them pistons, rings, bearings, bushings, valves and valve seats, sealings and gaskets as well as ignition and system protection products developed and manufactured by Federal-Mogul Powertrain.

The panel of judges for the 2015 International Engine of the Year Awards, which comprises 65 experienced and respected motoring journalists from a total of 31 countries, rewarded engine designs that blended high-end performance with advanced technologies designed to reduce emissions and substantially improve fuel economy. They also favoured those where weight reduction had been a significant development consideration.

Gian Maria Olivetti, Chief Technology Officer, Federal-Mogul Powertrain, stated, “We are very familiar with the criteria used by the judges in selecting the winning engines because they are core to our design and development process. Federal-Mogul’s engineers are at the forefront of advanced powertrain component technology and work continuously with customers to provide products that meet their requirements for improved fuel economy and emissions together with even higher levels of performance. We congratulate the winners of this prestigious award – many of whom are our customers – which recognizes the very best in advanced engine technology.”

The overall winner of the 2015 International Engine of the Year Awards, the 1.5-litre, three-cylinder electric-gasoline engine in the hybrid powertrain of BMW’s i8, features Federal-Mogul wear-resistant IROX® bearings, known for reducing wear in hybrid and start/stop engine designs.

The 1.2-litre EB2DT ‘PureTech’ unit from PSA Peugeot Citroën was the winner in the 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre engine category and a close contender for the overall title. This engine uses products from across Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s product portfolio, including pistons, piston rings (with Carboglide® top ring and LKZ® oil ring), hybrid liners, cylinder head gaskets, sliding bearings, valves (intake and hollow exhaust) and valve seats.

“We worked closely with PSA Peugeot Citroën from the outset of the programme on the technologies developed for the PureTech engine family,” stated Benoît Frouvelle, Customer Director, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “The targets were deliberately ambitious, but we succeeded in meeting and even exceeding expectations.”
