The European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) announced the winners of its 2012 Powder Metallurgy Thesis Competition during the opening plenary session of the Euro PM2012 Congress & Exhibition, Basel, Switzerland, 16 -19 September 2012.

The winner in the Doctorate category was Dr Catalina Elena Jiménez for her thesis on “Characterisation and modification of powders used to make Al-based metal foams”, which was completed at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology, TU Berlin.

The Masters winner was Bruno José Jordão Marques from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, for his thesis “Stainless Steel as an alternative binder in WC based composites”.

Both winners were awarded their prizes, sponsored by Höganäs AB, of cheques for €1000 and €750 for the Doctorate and Masters categories respectively.

The PM Thesis Competition is held every two years and aims to promote powder metallurgy and to encourage research at both under and post graduate levels among young scientists at European academic establishments.
