In addition to the presentations from EPMA’s Executive director, Dr Lionel Aboussouan, and EPMA president Ralf Carlström, the Plenary Session will also feature:

  • ‘Steel and metal powder in the Swedish transition – past, present and future’ – Annika Roos (Jernkontoret) This presentation offers an overview of the evolution of metal powder production in Sweden over the past century. Leveraging Sweden’s extensive technical expertise and long-standing tradition in metallurgy, the presentation highlights key advancements and milestones in the industry. It also examines the importance of steel and metal powders in the context of Sweden’s ongoing climate transition, highlighting their potential contributions to sustainability and reduced environmental impact.
  • ‘The journey towards sustainability – how can powder technology support the green transformation?’ – Dr Henrik Karlsson (Volvo Group) The planet’s natural resources are limited, while economic activity is expected to double by 2050. There are huge incentives to rethink existing production and consumption patterns: greater attention to materials use and circularity could improve resource efficiency and Volvo Group’s goal is to help its customers achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This will be achieved by promoting the decarbonisation of all aspects of operations, including procurement, logistics, research, product development and production. To achieve this, we need to ‘reinvent’ the way vehicles are designed, developed and manufactured. In this transformation journey, Powder Metallurgy – considered a ‘green technology’ – could play a vital role, not only by a resource-efficient production and optimised design towards light components but also the clear advantages in, for instance, repair and prolonging the life of component should be addressed.

After these presentations, the plenary will conclude with the 2024 award ceremonies, inlcuding the PM Thesis Competition, Keynote Paper Award, DSA and Fellowship Awards, Sustainability Award and PM Component awards.
