Arcast, Maine, USA, reports that its team has successfully gas atomised titanium with a D90 of less than 60 µm (D50 of 25 µm to 35 µm) with no ceramic contact or any other risk of oxide contamination. According to Arcast, the gas-to-metal ratio achieved is a fraction of the ratio conventionally achieved using standard free fall gas atomisation methods.
Arcast’s method can reportedly receive a wide range of melt feedstocks, including bar, scrap or sponge. The company hopes to combine this with one of their pre-existing continuous alloying furnaces. The next phase of development will focus on processing a wider range of titanium alloys and other reactive or refractory alloys.
According to the company, the atomisation process will allow more efficient atomisation and reduce the risk of contamination in order to produce low-cost, clean and fine spherical titanium alloy powder.
