Alleima receives sustainability gold from EcoVadis

August 30, 2024

Alleima, headquartered in Sandviken, Sweden, has been awarded a gold medal by EcoVadis, placing Alleima in the top 5% of the over 130,000 companies assessed in terms of sustainable business practice.

“We are proud to have been awarded the EcoVadis gold medal. This confirms that we have the ability, the capacity, and the commitment to handle a broad range of sustainability aspects. The fact that we are now improving our last year’s silver rating to a gold medal also shows that we are committed and constantly looking for how to improve our work within sustainability,” said Johnny Ulander, Sustainability Manager at Alleima.

The methodology used by EcoVadis is based on international sustainability standards and supervised by a scientific community of sustainability and supply chain experts. EcoVadis looks at how companies implement sustainability across their supply chain.

“EcoVadis is an important tool for us when evaluating sustainability aspects among suppliers in the value chain. Our gold medal provides an opportunity for our customers to evaluate us in the same way,” added Håkan Sundström, Head of Sustainability and Governance at Alleima.

Alleima has a relatively low climate footprint from operations due to the use of recycled steel (~83%) and fossil-free electricity in production facilities and is committed to minimising its social and environmental impact through reducing its water usage, careful chemical management, and effective use of by-products such as slag, dust, and process gases.

EcoVadis rates the performance of twenty-one sustainability criteria, in four themes: environment, labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. It is based on leading standards, and is supervised by an international scientific committee. The scoring is based on the company’s policies, actions and results, as well as inputs from third-party professionals and external stakeholders.

Alleima highlighted the following points in the EcoVadis report:

  • Alleima is in the top 2% of companies rated by EcoVadis in the manufacture of basic iron and steel industry
  • In sustainable procurement, Alleima ranks in the top 1% of companies in its industry
  • Alleima’s environmental score is in the top 8% in the industry
  • In labour & human rights, the score is in the top 11% in the industry
  • For ethics, including information security, Alleima ranks in the top 8% in the industry
