AGMA seeks experts to revise PM spur gear bending load guidelines
October 9, 2024
The American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) has announced it is establishing a working group under the Cylindrical Gear Rating Committee to create bending load capacity and pitting resistance information for Powder Metallurgy gears.
The association is looking to revise AGMA 930-A05 Calculated Bending Load Capacity of Powder Metallurgy External Spur Gears into a new document, AGMA 936-Axx under the following scope of the project: AGMA 930-A05 is an information sheet that details a calculation method for PM External Spur Gear bending load capacity.
This information sheet has been in AGMA’s library for 19 years and has now shown through use to have the following issues:
- It is too conservative for the rating of PM gears
- Helical gears are not covered by this information sheet but need to be added
- Internal gears need to be added to the rating method potentially using the ISO method for J factor calculation.
- Add J factor calculations for circular arc root fillets for external gears and refer to AGMA 908 for trochoidal root fillets. Protuberance will also be included.
- AGMA 2101 has been updated to revision EXX and this document should be adjusted to be more in line with AGMA 2101 in some basic principles
- The method should be standardised with the intent of revising the information sheet.
- As part of the development of this document, consideration should be given if pitting can be included in the ratings at this time.
- Additively manufactured gears will not be included
